New York Solar Power

One would think that a state as large and influential, with a history of supporting progressive causes, like New York, would have been one of the forerunners of renewable energy policy in the U.S., but sadly, you would be wrong. New York State came into the clean energy game a little late. In May 2007, the New York Public Service Commission issued an order instituting a proceeding to develop an Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard (EEPS) which was similar to, but years after, other renewable energy standards in states like California and New Jersey. The EEPS set a goal of reducing electricity usage in New York by 15% from projected electricity usage in 2015. As part of the EEPS, New York’s state utilities were required to file energy efficiency and renewable energy programs which were funded through surcharges on retail sales of electricity and natural gas by state utilities.

From the EEPS came one of New Yorks most successful solar incentive programs, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority solar program which provides a cash incentive of $1.75 per watt to eligible installers for the installation of approved, grid-connected solar PV systems. This program, initially funded at $75.2 million through half of 2010, has helped New York install over 56 megawatts of solar power in 2010 alone, making New York the seventh largest state in the U.S. in installed solar capacity. Now the program has been re-funded to $144 million from 2010 to 2015 ensuring that new Yorkers who want to go solar can. In addition to this program, other utilities such as Long Island Power Authority, have their own solar incentive programs to help lower the cost of solar for New York residents.

Home Solar Financing

While many New York residents may be excited at the prospect of investing in solar panels for the home, since the average residential solar system costs between $15,000-$25,000 after rebates and incentives, this may represent too large of an upfront investment for most people. Not too worry…our NY solar installation partners recognize this have developed a number of solar financing options to help residents invest in solar power without having to come up with such a large up-front payment. Whether it is a great interest rate on a home equity loan, a solar lease, or a power purchase agreement, there are plenty of options for consumers to consider making solar in New-York a reality. So even if you do not think you can afford the cost of solar up front, make sure you still talk to NY solar companies who can educate you on all available solar financing options.

New York Solar Rebates and Tax Incentives

One of the great facts about solar in New York is that there are large number of New York solar rebate programs and New York financial options that exist to make it easier to afford solar power for your home. Whether you live in Albany, Buffalo, Manhattan, or Rochester, there will be a rebate and/or incentive that will help make solar a reality for you. There are great rebate and incentive programs available from major New York Utilities such as Consolidated Edison Company (ConEd), Long Island Power Authority (LIPA, LILCO), New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG), Central Hudson Gas Electric (CenHud), Rockland Electric Company (RECO), Niagara Mohawk Power (NMPC), Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E), and at times from other NY municipal and county electricity providers such as Jamestown Board of Public Utilities (JBPU) and Bath Electric Gas & Water Systems (BEGWS).  Our professional NY solar installers are up to date on all of the applicable NY solar incentives to save you as much money as possible on your solar system installation.

Home Solar Benefits

The benefits of home solar power are numerous, especially when it comes to saving money. Those that own solar power systems no longer pay utility companies thousands of dollars each year because a solar power system may be able to lower you electric bill by 70% or more. And now with current government rebates and incentives, solar power systems cost homeowners only about half as much. Many solar companies in NY also have fantastic financing programs that can require as little as $0 down with a monthly payment structure that will still be less than what you are paying for electricity without solar. In addition, by installing solar you may be able to not only increase your home value by $20,000-$40,000 but can also protect yourself from rising electricity costs over time.
